“In offshore environments, asset integrity is constantly tested by harsh marine conditions. MODU spud legs are particularly vulnerable and when compromised, they place both operational reliability and personnel safety at risk. TIS restores structural strength through advanced marine-class repairs, ensuring critical assets remain stable and service-ready.”
A multinational offshore drilling operator contracted TIS to renew the Marine Class Approval for one of its Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODUs). At the center of this work were the spud legs, large, high-strength carbon steel structures that provide stability during drilling. After years of offshore service, the spud legs had accumulated marine growth and signs of wear.
Securing renewal of the Marine Class Approval meant bringing the spud legs back into full compliance with classification society requirements. Beyond addressing the visible buildup and wear, the work had to meet strict technical standards while maintaining safety in a live offshore environment. For the operator, their objective was clear: to extend the life of the asset, stay compliant, and ensure reliable performance for future operations. The work called for advanced access solutions for critical structural areas, allowing for the removal of marine growth without compromising the steel, as well as executing all hot work to Marine Class specifications.
TIS provided a turnkey solution, managing the project from preparation to final certification. High-pressure water jetting first removed marine growth while preserving steel integrity. Rope access and scaffolding then allowed certified inspectors to evaluate each section, identifying welds and members needing attention.
Where tubular replacements were required, TIS’ rigging specialists engineered and executed custom offshore solutions that ensured stability and safety. Controlled heat treatment followed, carried out in strict accordance with Marine Class requirements. Welding and fabrication were performed by certified welders using both manual and semi-automatic methods to meet the demanding standards of high-strength offshore steel.
By leveraging its multiskilled team across rigging, inspection, welding and heat treatment, TIS delivered an integrated solution completed on schedule, with no safety incidents, no rework and full recertification achieved. The project highlighted both the reliability of the repairs and the advantage of a locally-based workforce capable of managing the entire scope from start to finish.
Their offshore team worked with a strong focus on safety and coordination, completing the job efficiently and without incident. Communication was clear, expectations were managed, and the work was executed to the highest standard.
We were very satisfied with the performance and would welcome the opportunity to work with TIS again in the future.
